6:01 pm
know. so, it was nothing that needs to be said or a special meeting or anything and everybody's focused. >> the same as every other week. treating it like another game. loose, focused, upbeat. you can call it what you want, we're doing what we have to try to win this game. i think the biggest thing, you have to realize it's another football game. there might be more people watching, many r at stake, but you go out and execute like you normally do and perform well, you'll win the game. >> their heads hit the pillow and believe they had done everything they could have done to prepare for this game and then get a great night's sleep. >> and jim harbaugh that december well on the road. they are tied for the best road record and if this team wins on
6:02 pm
sunday, he will become the first san francisco coach to win back-to-back conference championships on the road, but there are certain things this team cannot prepare for. later in sports, ray will join me to discuss what those are and how the team will need to react for them. >> and fingers crossed as well. thank you, mindy. back here, muni is taking precautions in case rowdy fans cause trouble. monte francis is in the city with the latest on that. >> good evening. muni says this is all about safety, that in the past, celebrating fans have climbed on top of streetcars and gotten close to those streetcars, which are charged with electricity, so muni is going to deenergize the wires and take the historic streetcars out of service tomorrow. buses will run up and down market street instead. now, the same thing is being done on part of the n judith line.
6:03 pm
also k the iconic cable car lines will be mostly out of service starting tomorrow afternoon. the california line stops at 2:00 p.m. and the palo mason cable car line will run only between fisherman's war f and china. >> the celebrations do get out of hand, we can either reroute around those celebrations or insuring that if people do climb on to energized lines, there is an energy running out that could be harmful to people who do climb on board. >> muni is also trying to take care of its property. this is not if first time muni has taken such steps because of rowdy fans. a spokesperson says the agency took similar steps the last few years during big games.
6:04 pm
>> the enthusiastic fans out there or sips just yet today? >> well, not a whole lot of signs, but we see a lot of people sort of walking around here near the waterfront wearing their 49ers gear and they seem pretty excite d for tomorrow's game. >> all the bankers in the east bay were wearing 49er gear as well. thanks a lot. and stay with nbc bay area for 49ers special right after this newscast. we'll break down the match-up. that's at 6:30 right after this newscast. it took just a few minutes for a fire to destroy a popular restaurant in the south bay and having a fire station just around the corner still wasn't enough to save it. kimberly is in south san jose with more on that. >> hello, everyone. this fire started 12 hours ago and there are still firefighters out here at this hour making sure it is completely out and there are no flare ups in the
6:05 pm
situation. you can see the damage. the restaurant was gutted by those fast moving flames. this fire started just before 6:30 this morning. there were workers inside getting the shop and bakery ready to open. the chef said the walls started shaking and when he ran to the front of the restaurant, he saw flames. knowing he and his co-workers were ill equipped to handle the fire, he says he ran across to the fire station to help. it took 72 firefighters to get this fire under control. one of their major concerns was keeping it from spreading to a nearby gas station and other businesses. >> i've lived in this neighborhood over 25 years and it's just really sad to think that one of the neighborhood places we used to go for breakfast, we had family gatherings there. i'm really sad. i hope they get to rebuild it. >> firefighters say grease from the kitchen fueled the flames. no injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is still
6:06 pm
under investigation. flames, which is a part of a popular chain in san jose has been at this location for two decades. residents tell us it is a well loved gathering spot for the neighborhood and they are hoping the openers will decide to rebuild. >> thank you. in marin county, firefighters have a wildfire fully contained tonight. officials say the fire started about 9:20 last night near alpine lake. fire officials say there are in evacuation orders. the cause is still under vest gag. frenld friends are mourning the death of a 14-year-old girl who was killed by a light rail turn. the memorial is growing. she was hit by a train while riding her bike on southwest express way yesterday morning. she died halater at the hospita.
6:07 pm
>> she was an open girl. she loved the sing and she could care less what people had to say about her. she was so kind and caring. >> she was the student at del mar high school in san jose. counselors will be on hand on tuesday when classes resume. police on the peninsula are asking for the public's help to find a man who was exposing himself on a busy street. last saturday, a woman spotted the man touching himself while inside his car. she said she knocked on the car and yelled at him. she said the man was able to drive away as she called 911. the witness came up with this sketch. described as middle eastern or hispanic. he was driving a newer black four door toyota camry. and coming up next at 6:00, the governor declared a drought

emergency and the lack of rain is affecting everyone from ranchers to skiers. and the bay area pays tribute to martin luther king jr. we'll show you that. plus, you may be paying more to cross the golden gate bridge soon. more on a possible toll increase coming up. good evening. another record setting day across the bay area with our warmest location at gilroy reaching 80 degrees. we'll let you know if there is any rain coming up and what the game looks like as well. stay tuned.
6:09 pm
6:10 pm
people across the nation are honoring the memory of dr. martin luther king jr. the san francisco recreation and parks department honored his accomplishments today beginning with a march. he took the group from the opera house to the swimming pool. once there, they teamed up with with habitat for humanity to do some clean-up. >> we were fortunate enough to get support from kaiser that year, so we were able to ramp up our efforts and do more work and really focus on a project that really isn't able to to. we're just really happy to be here. it's a beautiful day. >> about 200 volunteers reported
6:11 pm
today's tribute and clean-up efforts. and new at 6:00, drivers will soon be able to speak their mind about proposed toll hikes on the golden gate bridge. officials are considering several options that could raise tolls to $7 a toll. while the current pay by place toll could go up to $8. authorities say they need to raise more than $100 million to off set a budget shortfall. the meetings start tuesday at san rafael with the whistle stop at 5:00 p.m. and coming up next, hotels in lake tahoe are just as empty as some of the ski slopes and that means some deals. and that's right. we've only seen about 3 inches of rain in san jose. across the bay area, the drought worries continue. where's the rain? across the pacific northwest. we'll let you know if we have any rain in our own forecast.
6:12 pm
so delicious, they won't even know it's chicken. 50% less fat... 100% johnsonville taste.
6:13 pm
6:14 pm
it's official. california is experiencing its driest year since the state started measuring rainfall back in 1849. yesterday, governor jerry brown declared a water emergency and ranchers say with no rain, that means no grass for cattle and spending more on feeds. >> a lot of guys are going to have to reduce their cow herd by significant amounts. 20, 30, 50%. >> hopefully, it will rain eventually. but in the meantime, we have to do our part. >> rate growers say they are
6:15 pm
concerned for their season as well. fewer skiers and snowboarders on the mountain and this holiday weekend when prices would normally be at their highest, there's lots of empty hotel rooms. last minute visitors say there's lots of deals to be had. we looked online and found hotels offering rooms for less than $50 a night. >> we found it on expedia and it was super cheap. done. >> it looked like a ghost town. >> however, for businesses like the powder house ski and snowboard rental, the season hasn't been as bad as expected. they haven't seen a significant amount of out of state customers and looking at the ritz carlton website on the north shore, prices for a basic room there are still more than $500 a night this weekend, so it's all over the board. anthony slaughter is here with your micro climate forecast and i have to say, anthony, it is
6:16 pm
beautiful outside, even though it's not supposed to be like that. >> it's hard to enjoy the sunshine when we're not supposed to have it this time of year and unfortunately, the air quality continues to get worse and worse every day. you'll find on the scroll, no rain unfortunately as even we round on january. looks like this is going to go down in 2014 as one of our driest months as far as januarys go and that's really you aren't because we need the rain. we're under clear skies for the most part. san francisco, sun just went down. really what we're going to be looking at into the overnight hours is clear skies, so no fog to speak of tonight and even a little bit of fog, so some good news. we need every little bit we can get. pacific northwest has gotten up to about 30 inches of rain this past year. storm track is well up into canada and diving through portions of seattle over towards portland. that's where they've seen the
6:17 pm
excess amount of rain. at home, we've got high pressure in control. and this thing has continued to pump in warm air each and every day. really since this summer and it hasn't really changed much. this is known as a blocking ridge. when you get this, basically, you don't get any storm systems that can enter in. any storms that do come in, they've got to be stronger to at least override it. so this pattern is going to be staying in place at least for the next week or so and could continue. as you've been hearing a lot of the media outlets have been talking about this drought continuing, not only for january, but now, it's going to continue through march and you'll notice most of the state of california under an extreme drought. it really doesn't get much worse than this, so the potential for water restrictions is becoming a real reality as we head through the next couple of months, unlike the fake reality we enjoy when you can use as much water as you please. so we're going to be dealing with that the next few months.
6:18 pm
for tomorrow though, you'll notice that unhealthy air quality is going to be with us once again. unfortunately, no relief on that front. get you to nose numbers and we're going to looking at tomorrow record warmth from livermore to san jose, santa rosa, san francisco and oakland, expect it to not only tie a record, but maybe even break some records tomorrow. the rest of your cities, you'll find the south bay back into the low to mid-70s. peninsula, right here 70 degrees. palo alto, 72. north bay, east bay and tri, 73 in walnut creek. livermore will be the warmest tomorrow at 73. if you are making plans to celebrate the 49ers win, here's your forecast. it's going to be good. just a few passing clouds and temperatures in the 40s, so as mindy mentioned earlier, picture
6:19 pm
perfect weather. what do you think? >> i think absolutely they can. and it's a good attitude. thanks, anthony. > . >> big time 49 fans there, too. today marks the 24th anniversary of their first arrival at pier 39. a handful of sea lions first appeared at the dock shortly after the earthquake. at first, pier 39 wasn't crazy about the visitors and some tried to get them to move. then, everybody realizes those sea lions are a big draw. about 650 sea lions can be seen and heard during the year and the aquarium also opening its new sea lion center today. ski resorts in lake tahoe are catching 49er fever as well. what they did this weekend to support the team.
6:20 pm
6:21 pm
6:22 pm
some folks joined local and state officials to celebrate 150 years of rail service between san francisco and san jose. cal train is the oldest passenger railway in the west, and so, today, a special train made stops at each of the historic stations along the way. the trains picked up riders at every station. cal train serves about 54,000 riders every weekday. dressed up in costume there as well. lake tahoe is rooting for the san francisco 49ers. check out this at north star today. a monster sized seahawks logo. all part of two rallies. support of their team by crushing the logo. this snow cat came in a couple of different times and there was a similar scene at heavenly.

6:24 pm
6:25 pm
guys are feeling nervous. the 49ers are less than 24 hours away from the biggest game of the season so far. they're in seattle and they have the latest on the 49ers final preparation. >> the fans are nervous, but they are prepared and that takes away any nerves. we know the work they've put in and we know the coaches tend to be paranoid, but what is it about this game they cannot prepare for, that they have to react that could be a problem for them?
6:26 pm
>> they've been preparing since probably the start of week three, the list is short, but the one thing they probably cannot prepare for is the fact that seattle is a tough front-runner. if they get up 10-0, 13-3, they start rubbing it in and seattle is a hard team to come back and catch from behind and the 49ers in their last two games have lost their composure once the game started stretching away. if they tend to win this game, if they have to deal with seattle getting up early, they're going to have to maintain that composure. they've got to be able to bite their tongues, maintain focus and try to be a team that does the one that nobody does at century link and that is come from behind. >> do you think this is a different situation and they will be able to control their
6:27 pm
emotions for this one? >> i don't know, it's hard. seattle doesn't lose up here. arizona notwithstanding. i think the worst thing they can do is test the theory. they get down, 13-3, 17-7, it's not going to be easy because seattle is is seattle. >> everyone has their take on what's going the make the difference in this game. we're done talking. we're ready to watch the game tomorrow. >> after the game, flip over to csn bay area for full coverage of the game. we will have you covered with live reports from seattle as well as all the analysis you can handle. how about some horse racing? cal derby at golden gate fields. the number 4 horse, well, it's name is harbaugh will the race predict the nfc championship game? starts quickly, burst into the front and would take the
6:28 pm
majority of the race, but would eventually faed down the stretch, finishing seventh of the eight horses in the race. exit stage left. he takes the victory, remains unbeaten. over to the court. warriors and pelicans. fr from later in the quarter, pelicans up two in transition. anthony david with the lay in and one. second quarter, pelicans up eight. austin rivers misses. follows with the dunk. right now, we've got a close one. cal up 11. jordan is the richard solomon. 12 points, nine rebounds. high flier, two handed flush.
6:29 pm
cal wins 76-55. go to the ice with the sharks and lightning. sharks down one. seven seconds. power play. a minute left. matt early's shot. the hat trick and yes, the sharks get the victory, 5-4. diane, much more coming up tonight at 11:00. >> all right, we'll see you thin and coming up right now, the special niners program. for the third year, the 49ers will play for the championship. 49ers, seahawks, the count down to kick off is on.
6:30 pm
>> it's going to be intense, physical. i don't know if there are going to be handshakes after this one. >> wilson got crusheded. >> a heated rivalry is brewing and it's win or go home. >> he gets from behind, fumbles the ball picked up by seattle. >> but how much of an advantage will seattle's 12th man be? >> we'll have 11 on the field. >> two team, one goal. to hold the lombardi trophy. we're in san francisco and seattle to break it all down. this is the quest for six and it started now.
